Empower "U", Inc. is a private, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) minority, peer-based and managed organization founded by and for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Empower "U", Inc. grew from the need of the infected community to become involved in finding and linking to care, HIV positive individuals who are marginally connected or not receiving medical care and services. We continue to advocate for and serve those who do not have voices.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic disproportionately affects minority populations throughout the nation and in Miami-Dade County. AIDS and HIV prevalence show the disproportionate effect of the epidemic on the Black population. Blacks, including Haitians, represent 51 percent of PLWA, although they represent only 19 percent of the county population. The 2003 rate of reported AIDS cases among Blacks was 24.3 per 100,000 residents, nearly 1.5 times higher than the rate among Hispanics and over 6 times higher than among Whites.
At the end of 2003, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with 24-27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection. The numbers will continue to rise and unless we take an innovative, non-traditional approach to fighting HIV in closing the gap in health care disparities. |
